Why are so many kids being diagnosed with ADHD? Where was that disease when I was growing up?

Why are so many parents taking their kids to get medicine for this so called ADHD? I am not saying it does not exist, but I do not believe it does to the extent that some people have made it out to be. Here's an example - I will be in a store and see a mother with three kids.
